End of the butty? Four alternative ways to use bread knives
A massive 50 million fewer loaves of bread are being sold in supermarket according to reports released this week.
The timeless tradition of preparing sandwiches before work has fallen out of favour with modern Britain’s who prefer meal deals at supermarkets. In 2015 bread sales lost 5.4% of its value but this year has reduced even further by 8.9%, bringing the value beneath £1.5bn mark.
But what will happen to the reliable bread knife if loaves completely lose favour with the British public? At Butcher’s Equipment we have found four alternative ways you can still put our bread knives to good use.
1. Chocolate
A popular use for chocolate lovers, the sharp little teeth on our serrated knives makes cutting chocolate into smaller pieces easier.
2. Melon
You can use bread knives to remove the rind of a melon. To do this you slice off the top and bottom of the melon, and then use the serrated knife to remove the outer rind, before you can cut it into pieces.
3. Tomatoes
Serrated knives are also just as good for cutting tomatoes as tomato knives, you can cut the tomato into thin pieces without the mess ordinary knives make. You could also use the knives to cut other fragile flesh fruits like nectarines and peaches.
4. Cake
One of our favourite alternatives to the bread knife, using bread knives instead of plan knives is perfect for cutting cakes without ripping them to bits like other knives.
