Up next in our winter warmer series - the succulent sausage roll. The cold is on the way, so it’s time for you to start thinking about adding some delicious, easy-to-make comfort foods to your in-store selection. The sausage roll has been a classic piece of Great British cuisine for generations. You can find some sort of variation on this timeless bake in any good butcher’s shop around the UK (or the world for that matter), so it’s definitely a safe bet when it comes to satisfying hungry customers!

Here at Butchers Equipment Warehouse we’d definitely recommend adding some sausage rolls to your selection of takeaway treats, so we’ve come up with a truly delicious recipe that you can use to do just that.

We’ll start with the ingredients

For 8 sausage rolls, you will need:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 6 pork sausages, skins removed
  • 1 tbsp English mustard
  • 4 rashers streaky bacon, finely chopped
  • 1 x 320g sheet ready rolled puff pastry (or make your own if you know how!)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

Method

  1. First, fry up your onion over a medium heat until it’s softened. This will take about 8-10mins. Once you’ve done that, transfer your onion over to a large bowl and set it aside for later.
  2. Next, add your sausage meat, mustard and bacon to the bowl and give everything a good mix. Once you’ve done that, put your oven on to preheat (gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C).
  3. Set your sausage mix aside and take a large chopping board. Lightly sprinkle some flour over your chopping board and lay your pastry over it.
  4. Cut the pastry in half lengthways to make 2 long strips. Halve the sausage mix and lay each half along the long edge of one of the pastry strips in a thin sausage shape.
  5. Roll up your meat mix in the pastry tightly, joining it at the bottom.
  6. Lightly brush the tops of your sausage rolls with the beaten egg and sprinkle some sesame seeds over them.
  7. Spread your sausage rolls out on a baking tray and pop them in the oven for about 30-35mins until they’re lovely and crispy.
